Police Sergeant Hospitalized After Squad Car Crash
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Chicago Police sergeant was hospitalized Wednesday morning, after his squad car and a sport-utility vehicle collided on the city's Southwest Side.
The crash happened around 2:20 a.m. at 59th Street and California Avenue, on the cusp of the Gage Park and Chicago Lawn neighborhoods.
It was not clear which vehicle hit which, but it appeared that the squad car also struck a pole, and the SUV hit a building.
Both vehicles sustained extensive damage.
The police sergeant was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. He suffered a head injury that involved some swelling, but police said he was conscious and talking at the scene.
The driver of the other vehicle, a man, suffered bumps and bruises and was taken to Holy Cross Hospital.
As of 6 a.m., 59th Street remained closed between Kedzie and California avenues as police investigated the crash.
