On Thursday, more than 70 people spent the day fanning out about 100 miles west of Chicago in the Sterling/Rock Falls area -- searching more than two dozen sites for Timmothy Pitzen. They came up with nothing.
Aurora Police Spokesman Dan Ferrelli says Timmothy's mother made cell phone calls last Friday from the Sterling/Rock Falls area. The last time anyone was reasonably certain Timmothy was with her, and he was all right.
Aurora Police Lt. Pete Inda says the use of search teams and dogs doesn't mean investigators are conceding the boy is dead.
They're looking for evidence that ranges from a backpack from the car to clothes and toys the boy's mother bought in Wisconsin.
"The last time anybody from the family talked to the boy was when he was in the car with the mom in this area of the state," Inda told reporters, including CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli.
Ferrelli says authorities will regroup and decide where to look next.
