Police Blockade Area Near UIC For 4 Hours After Robbery
Updated 12/7/11 at 6:33 a.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) - What started as an armed robbery on the city's Near West Side turned into what police thought was a barricade situation overnight.
Police say a suspect robbed a man at gunpoint near 14th and Morgan streets, a few blocks south of the University of Illinois at Chicago campus, around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
The suspect then ran into a nearby building.
The incident was not related to UIC, but the university still issued an "urgent message" over its alert system at 9:34 p.m., advising everyone to avoid the area around 14th and Morgan due to a barricade situation.
Meanwhile, police shut down surrounding streets and investigated for nearly four hours, but ultimately called off the search.
At 1:08 a.m., UIC sent another alert saying police had issued an all-clear message about the barricade, and the blockade had ended.
The suspect remained on the loose as of Wednesday morning, and police continue their investigation.
