But Illinois Department of Transportation secretary Gary Hannig says medical bills can also amount to tens of thousands of dollars.
This holiday weekend, as in years past, motorists can expect to find state police conducting roadside safety checks and safety belt enforcement at hundreds of designated areas.
Officials say those who do not follow the law will be arrested, and could face jail time.
