Police Narrow Area Tainted Candy Came From
SCHAUMBURG, Ill. (STMW) - Police in Schaumburg have narrowed down a geographic area where some tampered Halloween candy given to trick-or-treaters Sunday night is believed to have originated.
Police received two reports that candy given to children Halloween night had foreign objects inserted in it, according to an alert issued by Schaumburg police. The children got the candy while trick-or-treating in residential areas of the northwest suburb.
Police think the objects, "either a needle or a pin that was inserted into a candy bar" were put in the candy after the candy was manufactured, since "there was a small tear in the packaging ... brought in to [police]," Schaumburg police Sgt. John Nebl said.
Schaumburg police have narrowed down a geographic area of where the tampered candy came from, to Weathersfield Way on the north; Wise Road on the south; Braintree Drive on the east, and Springinsguth Road to the west, Nebl said.
"That's the general area both reports came from," he said.
No one was injured, but police are cautioning parents to inspect any candy before allowing children to eat it, and throw out open or damaged candy, according to the alert.
The news sent shockwaves through the community.
"I think it's a tragedy," Ron Rogalla, who handed out bags of chips for Halloween, told CBS 2's Pamela Jones. "But unfortunately, it's part of our times. Things happen."
