Police Nab Alleged Serial Burglar Red-Handed

LEYDEN, Twp. (WBBM) -- Police say they caught a serial burglar with a drug habit just after he broke into a home in Leyden Township.

Twenty-six-year-old Bradley Ott, according to investigators, figured nobody was home after ringing the bell.

So he put a brick through the glass in the front door and went inside. He then collected jewelry, cash, an iPod, video games and a checkbook.

Little did he know the home's resident, Mayra Olivares, was hiding in a closet with her son.

"I was really scared. I was already thinking, 'What if he sees me, what if he does something to me or my baby?'" she said.

Olivares showed CBS 2 where she hid herself and son. She frantically called 911 to report the burglary in progress.

A dispatcher told her to remain quiet and assured her help was on the way.

A Cook County sheriff's deputy was nearby when Olivares made her call and was there in minutes. Ott didn't even make it out of the house.

Sheriff Tom Dart says Ott, of Franklin Park, started talking after his arrest, saying he'd burglarized other homes in Franklin Park, Elmwood Park and Norridge. He said he pawned what he stole to buy drugs.

It's expected he'll be charged with those other burglaries.

"He's gonna be gone, he's going to be put away. So I'm happy," Olivares said.
