Police: Man Suffered Emergency Before Crash
NILES, Ill. (STMW) -- A man apparently suffered a medical emergency charged in the crash that killed a woman as she walked in Niles Sunday evening.
Robert Park, 56, of 9434 Sumac Road in Des Plaines is charged with leaving the scene of a crash, a Class 4 felony, Niles Sgt. Tom Davis said. Park was also cited for driving on a suspended license, which had been suspended for a DUI, he said.
Sonia Dorado was killed in the crash, police said. Dorado, 61, of the 6300 block of West Cuyler Avenue on Chicago's Northwest Side, was pronounced dead at 11:26 p.m. Sunday at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said.
Dorado was struck by a vehicle at 6:09 p.m. in the 8900 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, Davis said. Witnesses saw Park leave the scene in the vehicle and officers found him just minutes after the crash.
Park appeared confused and officers believe he may have had low blood sugar. Tests showed he had no alcohol or drugs in his system. Vicodin was found in the car but did not show up on any tests, Davis said.
When officers found Park, he was driving very slowly but did not react when officers tried to pull him over, Davis said. He told police he was trying to return to the scene.
Officers also found several rifles, which appeared to be used for hunting, inside the vehicle Park was driving, Davis said. He was not charged with any offenses regarding the weapons and it remained under investigation whether the vehicle belonged to Parka and whether the weapons were his.
Park was expected to appear for a bond hearing Monday morning, although court information was not immediately available.
