CHICAGO (STMW) -- A 28-year-old man was shot dead on the South Side Sunday night and police said they were questioning two suspects after they allegedly tried fleeing on the Dan Ryan Expressway and crashed.
The man was gunned down about 5:10 p.m. near 51st Street and Indiana Avenue in the Washington Park neighborhood, said police News Affairs Officer Daniel O'Brien, citing preliminary information.
Chrystal Kyles told the Chicago Sun-Times that the man killed was her only brother, Christopher Thomas, and was the father of a young girl.
"You never think the violence will hit directly at your home," Kyles told the Sun-Times.
Thomas, of the 5100 block of South King Drive, was pronounced dead just before 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Police officers were able to arrive at the scene of the shooting just in time to see two suspects take off in a car, police said, adding that it was unclear if police officers witnessed the shooting or were nearby when shots were fired.
The officers followed the car onto the Dan Ryan, where the car crashed into another vehicle at the 43rd Street exit, police said. Officers were able to arrest the duo near 43rd Street and Indiana Avenue, police said.
No charges had been filed early Monday morning.
