Police: Man Punched And Tried To Stab Officer Who Was Writing Him Ticket For Drinking On Red Line Downtown
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police say a man punched and tried to stab an officer who was trying to write him a ticket for drinking alcohol on a CTA Red Line train downtown late Wednesday.
As CBS 2's Jermont Terry reported, video taken Wednesday night showed the turnstile at the Jackson Red Line stop at Jackson Boulevard and State Street blocked as officers investigated.
At 5:42 p.m., officers saw the man drinking on the Chicago Transit Authority train near the stop, police said.
Officers escorted the man off the train and tried to write him an administrative notice of violation, or citation, police said.
The man first sucker-punched the officer in the face. The officer defended himself, and the man then pulled out a knife and tried to stab the officer, police said. The two started to tussle on the platform, very close to the tracks.
That is when the officer radioed for help.
It turned out the drunken man was the one who was seriously injured. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for head injuries and was also taken into police custody.
Thankfully, the officer was not stabbed, but he did go to the hospital with some injuries from the punch and fight.
The Red Line bypassed the Jackson stop for a good portion of the night, but it was back up and running as of 10 p.m.
