Police: Man Moves, Breaks Double-Parked Car In Suburbs
BUFFALO GROVE, Ill. (STMW) - A Buffalo Grove man who allegedly took it upon himself to teach parking etiquette received a lesson from police: Do not attempt to be a valet vigilante.
A woman drove Dec. 11 to the 1200 block of Deerfield Parkway to pick up her children from an apartment there, according to a Buffalo Grove police report. She could not find any parking spaces close to the residence and, with the temperature well below freezing, chose to double-park behind several other cars.
The woman told police she left her vehicle running and unlocked as she went upstairs to collect her children. When she came down, she noticed her car moving with a man behind the wheel, and the man stopped the car moments later.
"He got out of the vehicle and handed her a broken piece to her vehicle," according to the police report. "The piece ended up being the lever for the control of the windshield wipers."
The man then got into his own car and drove away. The police report did not indicate if the woman's car had been blocking his car.
The woman wrote down the man's license plate number, which she relayed to police.
The officers traced the plate to a 62-year-old man. The man agreed to pay the woman for the damage, police reported, and the woman did not press charges.
