Man Jumps On Hood Of Car To Stop Hit-And-Run Driver
RIVERSIDE (CBS) -- A man jumped Tuesday on the hood of a car, in the efforts to stop the driver from leaving the scene of a crash in west suburban Riverside.
The 44-year-old looked like a professional stunt man, but police said he was the victim of a hit-and-run and was determined to stop the suspect. Witnesses to the movie-like scene called police immediately.
The man was driving a 1999 Toyota van around 9:15 a.m. when he encountered road rage with another driver in the 3400 block on Harlem Avenue. The suspect, driving a 1992 Honda, crossed lanes and hit the victim's car.
Both drivers initially stopped to pull over, and that is when things took a turn, police said. The man got out of his car to speak with the other driver, and then the suspect took off south on Harlem.
The victim jumped back in his car, following the suspect while calling 911. When both vehicles reached Harlem and Ogden, the man jumped out of his car to try and stop the suspect.
The suspect had a metal pipe and jumped back into his car. He drove a few blocks thinking he would shake the victim. Outside the White Castle, the suspect started doing u-turns in the middle of the street. The victim managed to hand on for more than a minute, long enough for police to arrive to the scene.
Jacob D. Joyce, 21, was charged with hit-and-run, aggravated assault, reckless driving, and leaving the scene of an accident; and cited for driving while license suspended, driving without insurance and several other traffic violations, according to Riverside police.
The 44-year-old victim was not injured and refused medical attention, police said.
Several witnesses took video and pictures for the police.
