Police: Man Fleeing Fender Bender Crashes Just Blocks Away
CHICAGO (STMW) -- Several people were injured late Sunday, after a motorist involved in a fender bender tried to flee the scene, but crashed into a van just blocks away, authorities said.
The chain of events was put in motion when a 30-year-old man driving a Nissan Maxima rear-ended a Volvo in the South Side Grand Crossing neighborhood about 11:05 p.m., according to the police Office of News Affairs.
When officers on the scene in the 6700 block of South Indiana Avenue approached the Maxima to get the motorist's info, the driver sped off traveling west, police said.
He made it only about four blocks before he crashed into a northbound van full of people in the 6700 block of South State Street, police said.
Three people were taken in serious-to-critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County and an additional three people were taken in fair-to-serious condition to Saint Bernard Hospital, Chicago Fire Department officials said.
However, a police source indicated the injuries were not as bad as reported by fire department officials.
The fleeing driver was among those injured and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in "stable" condition, police said.
Charges against the man are pending.
