Police Fatally Shoot Homicide Suspect In Lyons
CHICAGO (CBS) – Police have pieced together how a murder in Sycamore led to a deadly officer-involved shooting across county lines.
A police shootout in the middle of a western suburb leaves one man dead. Investigators said he was responsible for a murder nearly 60 miles away.
Police have identified the suspect as Antonio Juarez. The 44-year old is accused of shooting and killed his estranged wife, Lidia Juarez.
He had an active order of protection against him and a warrant for domestic battery.
Lidia died in the initial homicide; then Antonio was involved in a police shootout 60 miles away in Lyons, where he died.
This double deadly incident had multiple parts and started in Sycamore.
Pictures from the Daily Chronicle show the initial homicide scene around 2 p.m. Friday in Sycamore, outside the Illinois Department of Human Services.
Lidia Juarez worked there. Investigators said Juarez gunned down his estranged wife Lidia outside her workplace. Police found the 37-year old dead in a car.
Police activated the DeKalb County Major Case Squad with Juarez, leading officers on a chase into west suburban Lyons – 60 miles from Sycamore.
He crashed into an SUB near Ogden and Joliet Road. That is when Juarez began firing at police, according to witnesses.
Officers returned fire, killing Juarez.
Witnesses in the normally quiet western suburb were shocked by the wild Friday evening.
"Two shots go off and then about five seconds later I heard a round of firing shots from what appeared to be more than one person shooting at something," said Monet Worsham, witness. "It all happened so fast."
"What we heard sounded like fireworks and I came out to see what was going on and some of my last customers were ducking and running inside of the shop," said witness, Bryan McPherson.
Investigators said they recovered a weapon and that Juarez acted alone.
