Police Increase Patrols In SW Suburb After 15 Car Burglaries
CHICAGO RIDGE, Ill. (STMW) - Police in southwest suburban Chicago Ridge have increased patrols after at least 15 cars were burglarized last weekend.
The burglaries were reported on the night of Saturday, June 11, into early Sunday morning from Central Avenue to Austin Avenue, and 103rd to 111th streets, a release from police said.
At last count, 15 cars were broken into, most of which were unlocked. In two of the break-ins, a window was broken into to gain entry, the release said.
One vehicle had its window broken but the owner said nothing had been stolen. Another car owner said the change in their cup holder was missing and nothing else.
Other victims reported a DVD display screen that straps to the rear of the front seat headrests was taken, while another said cigarettes were stolen, the release said.
Another reported a Kenwood radio and drill had been stolen from his semi-tractor, which was parked in a lot on Central Avenue.
In almost all cases, items were in plain view.
Deputy Chief Paul Landry said police believe a group of people burglarized the vehicles, but officers had no substantial leads on Tuesday afternoon.
Police are reviewing video footage from neighboring businesses, checking local pawnshops and seeking witnesses, police said. And in the village, police have increased patrols with both marked and unmarked vehicles during the night.
Landy said undercover units will be sent out during the weekend to further investigate.
