Police Find Teen Who Had Disappeared With 3-Year-old Nephew
CHICAGO (STMW) – A 14-year-old girl who went missing from the Northwest Side Thursday evening with her 3-year-old nephew has been found, one day after the younger child was safely recovered.
Maya White, who according to family members suffers from bipolar disorder, was being questioned by Near North District detectives around 6:50 p.m. Saturday, police News Affairs Officer Anne Dwyer said.
According to unconfirmed dispatch reports, someone reported seeing White Saturday afternoon at a fast food stand on the Near North Side.
Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, White left her nephew at a home near West Devon and North Western avenues and then called a family member to tell him where the child was. Elijah was in good health when he was found at the home.
Police had been searching for White and her 3-year-old nephew, Elijah Williams, since the pair went missing Thursday after buying a pizza near North Pulaski Road and West Wilson Avenue in the Albany Park neighborhood.
At the time of their disappearance, the children were being babysat by the boy's maternal grandmother at Elijah's home in the 4600 block of North Kasson Avenue, where he lives with his mother, father and twin sister, according to paternal grandmother Nancy Aardema.
Aardema said Maya, who lives in the West Rogers Park neighborhood, suffers from a bipolar disorder and did not have her medication with her. She said Maya went missing about a month ago, but not with the child, and she "assumes" she may have been with a boyfriend or other friends.
Aardema said had no idea why the girl would take the boy.
