Police: Elgin Man Wanted To Meet 14-Year-Old For Sex
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STMW) -- A northwest suburban man who thought he was meeting a 14-year-old girl for sex last week was instead met by a Lake County Sheriff's detective who had replied to his online ad for a "companion."
Sheriff's police said 27-year-old Marco Gomez of the 300 block of Standish Street in Elgin posted an advertisement on Craigslist, looking for a companion.
Once the ad was posted, he began communicating with who he thought was a 14-year-old girl, but that "girl" was actually a sheriff's detective, a statement from the sheriff's office said.
The two arranged to meet on July 3, but when Gomez arrived at the meeting place, a site in Lake County which was not disclosed by police, he was met by detectives, the statement said.
He was taken into custody and told detectives he was planning to meet with the 14-year-old girl to engage in sexual activities, the statement said. Gomez was charged with four counts of indecent solicitation of a child.
In Lake County Court, Gomez's was ordered held on a $75,000 bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
