Police: Drunken Driver Kills Mother Of 3
GARY, Ind. (CBS) – A mother of three children is dead, and her family looking for answers.
Damita Nicholson of Gary died early Sunday morning. Police say a drunken driver hit her car at 165th Street and Columbia Avenue in Hammond.
CBS 2's Marissa Bailey talked with her family. They're grieving for a young mom taken too soon.
Rose Nicholson, Damita's mother, got a phone call early in the morning. It would forever change the lives of her and her three grandsons.
"Drunk drivers are always the ones who live and somebody innocent is always the one to get killed," Rose says.
Damita was on her way home from a party when, police say, a drunken driver T-boned her car. The 38-year-old died hours later at the hospital
"She was always going to school, trying to better her life -- you know, get better jobs," Rose says.
She was raising three sons, Xavier, Jonathan and little Isaiah.
"I'm going to miss the time we had together. That was my only daughter," Rose says.
Now this grieving mother and grandmother has to find strength to step in and raise the children.
The eldest son is now given the tough task of teaching his brothers about a mom they'll never know.
The drunken driver who caused the accident is in critical condition, police said. They are expected to file charges in the next few days.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
