Police: Driver Was High When He Hit Pedestrian, Flower Shop
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A Northwest Indiana man was high on drugs when he hit and injured an 83-year-old pedestrian while driving through the Albany Park neighborhood earlier this week.
He also slammed into a flower shop in the neighborhood.
Jesus DeJesus, 46, of Highland, Ind., was charged Tuesday with one count of aggravated driving under the influence causing an accident, and misdemeanor counts of driving under the influence of a drug and driving on a revoked license.
He also faces numerous traffic tickets, including citations for negligent driving, failure to reduce speed, failure to keep in lanes, driving with no insurance and driving with no valid registration.
Police did not say what specific drug DeJesus was high on, but said it was not alcohol and not a narcotic.
DeJesus allegedly drove into an 83-year-old pedestrian waiting for a bus stop near Kimball Avenue and Irving Park Road at about 7:15 a.m. Monday, then struck two parked vehicles before crashing into a flower shop, police said.
The pedestrian was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.
Police said DeJesus was hospitalized after the crash, but by Tuesday afternoon was in police custody awaiting a bond hearing.
