Police Digging At Wisconsin Site For Girl Missing For 66 Years
(CBS) -- Police have begun digging in Janesville, Wis., trying to solve the 66-year-old disappearance of an 8-year-old girl.
"It would really be nice to know really what did happen," said Wayne Weckler, whose cousin, Georgia Jean Weckler, was last seen walking on a country road, heading home near Fort Atkinson, Wis., after school on May 1, 1947.
Police Investigating 66-Year-Old Cold Case
WBBM Newsradio's Regine Schlesinger reports it's believed Georgia was kidnapped and killed, but her body has never been found, and the crime has never been solved.
Police have begun digging up a vacant lot in Janesville, after getting a tip she might have been buried there.
Wayne, who was only 6 years old when his cousin vanished, said even if she were buried there, he's not optimistic anything will be found.
"It just seems to me, when animals die – and especially when you're really young – the bones aren't as hard," he said.
Still, Wayne said it would come as a relief to the family if Georgia's body were found, since the family has been living with the uncertainty for nearly seven decades.
Police said it could take days before they finish digging.
