Police Delay Response To Fatal Shooting Across The Street, In Another Jurisdiction
JUSTICE, Ill. (CBS) – The brother of a southwest suburban man questions whether rules about police jurisdictions contributed to his sibling's death.
Forty-seven-year-old Anthony Kingyon was shot to death Friday across the street from the Hickory Hills police station. But police there didn't immediately respond because the shooting scene is actually in Justice.
CBS 2's Derrick Blakley reports the victim's brother is struggling to make sense of it all.
He's wracked with grief and full of doubts. Kingyon's brother, David Ellis, wonders if his brother's life could have been saved.
"Why is a police department not responding to gunshots right here, yards away from their police department?" Ellis says.
Kingyon was killed in broad daylight at the apartment complex where he lived, the Oaks at Willow Hills. Hickory Hills police headquarters stands right across the street.
What bothers Ellis most is that the closest police force didn't respond first.
"Don't tell me you're not going to come to a gunshot just because it's not in your jurisdiction -- it happened right across the street," he says.
Hickory Hills cops did respond later, to back up Justice police. On Saturday, Cook County sheriff's investigators were gathering evidence.
Neighbors say a woman resident asked Kingyon for a cigarette, but he didn't have one. Minutes later, she allegedly returned and shot him three times.
The woman suspect was Kingyon's next-door neighbor.
Justice police are being assisted in their investigation by the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
Neighbors say the woman suspect was taken into custody, but so far, no confirmation of that from police.
CBS 2 tried to contact Hickory Hills police for comment but did not get a return call.
