No Explosives Found In Unattended Bag At O'Hare

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Operations at Terminal 1 at O'Hare International Airport were returning to normal late Wednesday morning, after part of the terminal was evacuated for more than an hour while police investigated a suspicious package.
Chicago police said an unattended bag in the upper level of the terminal prompted the response about 9:30 a.m. Police said the ticketing area and baggage claim at Terminal 1 were evacuated, and the upper and lower level inner roadways were partially closed. The Airport Transportation System to Terminal 1 also was suspended while police investigated.
A police source told CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli that a K-9 unit indicated that something suspicious might be in the bag, but police said the situation was resolved and the "all-clear" was given by 11:15 a.m., after the bomb squad determined the bag contained no explosives, and the area was deemed safe.
The terminal was reopened, ATS service has resumed, and the upper and lower roadways were reopened.
Flight operations at the airport were not affected by the evacuation.
WBBM Political Editor Craig Dellimore reports Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the quick response to the unattended bag shows the city is taking the threat of possible terrorism seriously.
"Thank God what happened at O'Hare here wasn't anything but actually what that did show is given what happened we had the plan in place," he said.
