Suspect dead after chase from Plano ends with shootout with police in Aurora, authorities say
AURORA, Ill. (CBS) — A suspect is dead after a police chase across multiple suburbs ended with an exchange of gunfire with police in Aurora, Illinois, Friday night.
At 6:45 p.m. Friday, Kendall County Sheriff's deputies were called to assist Plano police officers after a report of a home invasion in the 3800 block of Pratt Court in Plano. A man identified as Russell Novak, 70, was found in a house on the block with multiple gunshot wounds, and he died as a result of his injuries, police said.
A car believed to be associated with the incident was also found near the scene. Plano police officers tried to pull over the car, but its driver sped off.
Police said the pursuit ended near Ogden Avenue (Route 34) and Eola Road in Aurora, where deputies and officers came face to face with an armed suspect. A large police presence was near a gas station, where the chase possibly ended.
Police said: "Deputies and officers, facing a lethal threat, engaged the subject to protect the public and themselves. No law enforcement officers were injured."
Police later said the suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital where they died. The age and gender of the suspect were not released.
Around 10:30 p.m., the Kendall County Sheriff's Office requested the Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations Zone 1 to investigate the shooting.
