Police: 9-Year-Old Girl Killed In Aurora Crash
AURORA (CBS) -- Charges are pending against the driver in an apparent DUI crash Friday night that killed a 9-year-old Aurora girl.
The girl was a passenger in a 2009 Toyota Sienna minivan that was northbound on Broadway Avenue just south of Pierce Street about 9:10 p.m. when a southbound 2003 Cadillac Deville drifted into the northbound lanes, according to a statement from Aurora police.
The girl's mother, 40, was driving the Toyota and tried to avoid colliding with Cadillac by making a sharp left turn, police said. The Cadillac then hit the minivan on the passenger side where the girl was sitting. The woman was unable to stop the minivan until it hit a building on the west side of Broadway.
The 9-year-old was rushed to Mercy Medical Center in Aurora, where she was pronounced dead at 9:44 p.m., police said. Two Batavia girls who were in the minivan, ages 10 and 12, were also taken to Mercy with non-life-threatening injuries. The 9-year-old's mother refused medical treatment.
The 25-year-old man who was driving the Cadillac ran away from the scene of the crash, but was taken into custody near the High Street Bridge that crosses the Burlington Northern railroad tracks. Police said he displayed signs of intoxication when he was arrested.
The man was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Charges against him were pending Saturday morning.
