Plaque Marks Site Where Obamas Shared First Kiss
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Obamas kissed here.
While it remains to be seen if tourists will add this to their itineraries--along with the Willis Tower, Art Institute or Millennium Park--the site where President and Michelle Obama shared their first kiss now has a plaque, marking the moment for posterity.
The location is a former Baskin-Robbins ice cream shop. The black and gold plaque is attached to a granite boulder near the curb at Dorchester Avenue and 53rd Street on the South Side.
The plaque has a picture of the first couple with a quote from the president, who once described the moment in an issue of Oprah Winfrey's magazine: "On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb. I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate."
Mmmm, chocolate!
While it would seem unlikely that the spot would ever become a historic landmark, residents of the Hyde Park neighborhood told the Chicago Tribune that they hope it will attract tourists to the location where the Obamas romance was first sparked.
In June, the couple talked about their first dinner date in a video to promote a fundraiser called Dinner with Barack.
The couple visited the Art Institute of Chicago and ate lunch near a courtyard fountain. They also saw Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing."
"He showed all the signs," Michelle Obama said on the video. "The fountain, nice touch."
"Take tips, gentlemen," Obama joked.
