Plans Afoot For New Cubs Spring Training Stadium
MESA, Ariz. (CBS) -- The Cubs are back home at Wrigley Field now, and plans are moving ahead for a new stadium for the team in Arizona, according to a published report.
The Arizona Republic reports construction is expected to begin at an $84 million new stadium and practice field for the Cubs is expected to begin around Jan. 1, 2012, in Mesa, Ariz.
Negotiations are in progress with an architectural firm that would head up a design team for the stadium, the Arizona Republic reported. The firm has already met with the City of Mesa and Cubs coaching staff, the newspaper reported.
The Cubs will be an equal partner in the construction process, the newspaper reported.
The Cubs now play their spring training games at HoHoKam Park, a facility they have deemed inadequate. Last year, the Arizona House of Representatives agreed to a 10 percent surcharge on tickets for all spring games in hopes of raising $185 million over 30 years.
