Plane Crashes In Schaumburg; 1 Dead
SCHAUMBURG (CBS/STMW) -- A small airplane crashed at the Schaumburg Airport Monday afternoon, killing the pilot, federal officials say.

The single-engine Luscombe aircraft attempted to take off at about 3:30 p.m. and crashed. The Federal Aviation Administration confirms the pilot of the plane was killed.
Newsradio 780's Steve Miller reports the pilot was the only person on the plane and for some reason it came right back down after takeoff, landing hard just 10-feet off the runway in the grass.
The FAA says the plane -- with a tail number of N71823 -- is registered to a Palatine owner, but it wasn't known if the owner was flying the craft. An investigation is under way at the scene.
The pilot's name is not being released pending confirmation of identity and notification of relatives.
Preliminary witness reports indicate the plane was taking off when it rose up from the runway before drifting to the south and crashing nose-first next to the runway, according to police.
The Illinois State Police, National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration were all notified. Ann FAA spokesman said the NTSB is involved because there was a fatality.
