Plan For New Bridge At Site Of Deadly Train Wreck
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A new railroad bridge will be built at the site of a deadly train derailment and viaduct collapse in the northern suburbs on July 4.
The incident at Shermer Road on the Glenview-Northbrook border killed two people in their car.
Now, a new bridge is to be built under terms of an agreement between the two suburbs, the Union Pacific railroad and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The U.P. will pay for the project, which could cost about $10 million and take up two years to complete and also allow for expanding Shermer road to three lanes to improve safety.
There will also be temporary work done, including a connection from Shermer road to Patriot Boulevard and a traffic signal at Shermer and Lake Avenue.
The U.P.says especially hot weather caused the rails to buckle, leading to the derailment and collapse.
