Man Killed, Another Wounded In Drive-By Shooting In Pilsen

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A 43-year-old man was killed and another man was wounded in a drive-by shooting outside a Pilsen hot dog stand Tuesday night, and police believe the shooter was a woman.

The owner of Express Grill, 1730 S. Halsted St., said he was taking orders for food around 11:40 p.m., when he heard several shots.

Tomi Lazarevski said there were four bikers in line, all dressed in black vests, when he noticed one of the men walk toward a silver car. Moments later, shots were fired. Lazarevski said he believes the argument started elsewhere.

"From what I hear is they got into an altercation at the bar, Simone's, down the street, and then that's when they were coming over here for food, and then that other car followed them," he said.

Jesus Juarez, 43, was shot in the chest, and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 35-year-old man was shot in the left knee, and was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where his condition was stabilized.

Lazarevski said police officers told him the shooter was a woman in a car who opened fire as she turned the corner, but a police spokesperson would refer to a gunman.

Some of Juarez's friends and fellow bikers visited the scene Wednesday morning to pay their respects. Juarez was an avid biker and member of the Legion of Honor Motorcycle Association.

His family said he was a peacemaker who always put his family first.

"He's peaceful. He doesn't like problems, so he tried to be the bigger man," said his nephew, Abner Garcia.

Elizabeth Juarez had a message for her brother's killers.

"I know they're not going to turn themselves in. That's obvious. But think about it; they probably have kids, moms, children to think about. That's our brother. It's a life. They took part of our life," she said.

Jesus Juarez, who worked as a heating and cooling contractor, leaves behind three children.

No one was in custody for the shooting early Wednesday.
