PGA Championship Ratings Biggest Since 2009
(CBS) The PGA Championship is the least prestigious of the four majors, but its finish yesterday was easily the best of the golf season's big tournaments as Rory McIlroy charged back from a three-shot deficit on the back nine to win by a stroke over Phil Mickelson.
Add in its primetime finish because of a rain delay, and it made for big TV ratings.
The PGA Championship earned an averaged household rating of 6.0, which was up 36 percent from the 4.4 rating in 2013 when Jason Dufner held off Jim Furyk, according to CBS public relations.
This year's Masters -- alway the highest-rated golf day of the season -- drew a 7.8 rating on Sunday.
The 2009 PGA Championship was the last time the season's fourth major drew such a high rating. That season, YE Yang took down Tiger Woods, and the rating was a 7.5.
This year's final-round rating peaked with a 9.2 from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Central time, when the leaders were on the final four holes.
