Pfleger: Entire Englewood Neighborhood Is The Victim Of A Crime

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Rev. Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Parish is lashing out at the loss of services for the struggling people in communities on the city's South Side, particularly Englewood.

As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, Pfleger said a block from his church in the Auburn-Gresham neighborhood, a mental health clinic is closing. It is joining other eliminated programs for ex-offenders, summer teen jobs, and crime victim support.

"They said, 'Do you think we'll ever have a draft again in this country.' I said no. I said, 'As long as we have poor schools, no employment, and lack of options because you don't have education, when the military becomes one of the few options I can go to get away from a bad situation and possibly get some education, you don't need a draft, because it becomes the options of poor people," he said.

Pfleger in particular addressed the Englewood neighborhood, where two teenage boys – Dantril Brown, 17, and Jawan Ross, 16 – were killed and five others were injured in a shooting at a Church's Chicken at 66th and Halsted streets.

Pflager angrily said Englewood itself is a crime scene, and the victim of a crime – withdrawal of services from a community that needs it the most.
