PETA Donating Used Furs To Homeless In Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Some homeless people on the South Side are getting something to keep them warm later in the week, and it's coming from a most unlikely source.
The animal rights anti-fur group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has donated 100 fur jackets and coats to Matthew House, which provides food, daytime shelter and other services to the homeless.
"These are used fur coats in various states of condition, but they're still fur coats, and so they still give warmth," Matthew House spokeswoman Cynthia Milsap said.
PETA spokeswoman Ashley Byrne said the furs should be put to good use since they already exist.
"People who've had a change of heart about wearing fur can donate their fur coats, and we see that they go either to the homeless or sometimes we give them to wildlife sanctuaries to be used as bedding for orphaned animals," she said.
Byrne said PETA also has donated furs to refugees from Syria.
