JOLIET, Ill. (CBS) -- A pet died Wednesday evening when a fire broke swept through two attached homes in Joliet.

Joliet firefighters and police officers were called at 5 p.m. for a fire on Union Street. Two adjoining residences were on fire, and the occupants advised that everyone escaped safely.

No human injuries were reported.

However, the residents said two pets were still inside of one of the homes. It turned out that one of the pets died in the fire.

The tenant of the home where the fire started was not home at the time. The tenant of the other residence that caught fire was home with his wife and three kids—and they escaped when they smelled smoke.

The fire was extinguished, Joliet police said. The American Red Cross was assisting families late Wednesday, while investigators looked to determine the cause of the fire.
