Person Shot By Civilian CPD Employee In Lawndale
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A civilian employee of the Chicago Police Department shot a man who allegedly tried to rob him Monday morning in the Lawndale neighborhood.
Police said the shooting happened shortly before 6 a.m., when a robber approached the employee in the 1300 block of South Sawyer Avenue. The employee, a 57-year-old detention aide, shot the robber.
Neighbors said they heard as many as seven shots.
"You heard screeching from wheels, and then you heard shots. Boom boom boom boom boom, and then you heard more screeching, or whatever, and then you heard people screaming, so people came running out," Toya McIntosh said. "They didn't know who he was. They probably just said, 'Oh, dude is getting money, and we want some of it. They didn't know that he was prepared, and that he had expertise in doing what he did."
Witnesses said at least one of the would-be robbers sped away in a silver minivan, which police stopped at a McDonald's parking lot at Kedzie and Roosevelt. Sources said the driver was taken into custody, after what sounded like a high-speed getaway attempt.
"We heard the screeching. The car, it sounded like somebody was being chased," McIntosh said.
The man who was shot was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
The CPD employee was not injured.
