Person Killed By Red Line Train
CHICAGO (CBS) - A woman was struck and killed by a CTA Red Line train in the Edgewater neighborhood Tuesday morning.
According to a CTA system alert, there were major delays as of about 11:05 a.m. on the Red Line because of a medical emergency near the Berwyn station on the North Side.
Power was temporarily shut off to the tracks there because of a person pinned under a train.
Police and fire personnel were notified just after 11 a.m. and fire crews removed a person from the tracks and took them to Weiss Memorial Hospital, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Rich Rosado said.
The female victim later died, according to police News Affairs Officer Laura Kubiak. Her age was unknown, and the circumstances regarding the incident, were not yet known, Kubiak said.
The victim was a woman whose identity was unknown as of about 1:30 p.m., but who was believed to be in her 40s, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The circumstances of the incident were not yet known, according to police.
Police said the woman might have committed suicide.
According to the CTA, the power between the Addison and Granville stops was temporarily shut off, and commuters were redirected to shuttle buses.
By 11:30 a.m., Red Line service had resumed in both directions, but the Berwyn stop did not reopen until about an hour and a half later.
Belmont Area detectives are conducting a death investigation. An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday.
