Pedestrian Struck After Walking Onto Expressway In Indiana
HAMMOND, Ind.(STMW) -- A Chicago man suffered life-threatening injuries after walking into traffic on I-80/94 and being struck by a vehicle Saturday.
A trooper received a call at 7:11 p.m. about a pedestrian almost being struck while walking on the ramp from Indianapolis Boulevard to eastbound I-80/94, according to Indiana State Police.
While the trooper was responding to the scene, the pedestrian walked into the right lane of I-80/94 just east of the ramp and was struck, Indiana State Police said.
The pedestrian, Talgat Orumbayev, 23, of Chicago, was taken to Munster Community Hospital and later airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with life-threatening injuries, Indiana State Police said.
A 53-year-old driving a 2006 BMW, was unable to avoid hitting the pedestrian, Indiana State Police said. The front passenger side of the BMW and the windshield were damaged.
The driver, of Schererville, Ind., was taken to Munster Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Indiana State Police said.
The right and right center lanes of I-80/94 were temporarily closed due to the accident.
