Woman Just Out Of Jail Hit, Killed By Car On Eisenhower Expressway

UPDATED 09/02/11 12:47 p.m.

WESTCHESTER, Ill. (CBS) -- A woman walking on the Eisenhower Expressway was hit and killed by a passing car early Friday, about half an hour after bonding out of jail for drunken driving.

CBS 2's Kris Habermehl reports the crash happened around 6:10 a.m. on the Eisenhower. As late as 8 a.m., all lanes remained closed on the inbound Eisenhower west of 25th Avenue.

The 25-year-old woman was walking in the marked median area of the expressway when she was hit and killed by the car, Ilinois State Police said.

The older-model Toyota truck that hit the pedestrian was seen on the shoulder with heavy damage to the right front quarter, a headlight knocked out, and damage to the grille and bumper. Its driver was ticketed for driving in the restricted median space, state police said.

The woman who was hit and killed had been pulled over around 3:25 a.m. for driving the wrong way down the Eisenhower, state police said. She failed field sobriety tests and refused a breathalyzer test, so she was arrested, state police said.

The woman bonded out of the Westchester Police Station lockup around 5:40 a.m., state police said. When she was released, she was alert, state police said.

The woman told police she had no family or means of transportation, so a state trooper agreed to take her to a gas station nearby. State police have not determined how she got from the gas station to the median of the expressway.
