Pedestrian Killed As Two Vehicles Crash In Oswego
OSWEGO, Ill. (STMW) -- West suburban Oswego police on Saturday continued their investigation into an early-morning, two-vehicle traffic crash that killed a 22-year-old pedestrian.
Garrett M. Riotte, of the 300 block of Prairieview Drive in Oswego, died of injuries he sustained in the incident. It occurred about 2:21 a.m. Saturday just north of Route 71 and Forest Avenue, Oswego police Detective Sgt. Brad Delphey said in a statement.
Delphey identified the drivers of the two vehicles as Oswego residents Christopher J. Nevin, 25, of the 500 block of Heritage Drive; and Thomas D. Schillinger, 22, of the 200 block of Morgan Valley Drive.
Both men were charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Delphey said. Nevin was also charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol content of .08 or greater. Delphey said both of those charges are misdemeanors.
Nevin was taken to the police station and later released on bond.
Delphey's statement did not indicate how the crash occurred or where Riotte might have been in relation to the two vehicles. A police dispatcher on Saturday afternoon would say only that the crash remained under investigation.
Residents living near the scene said lights kept them up all night, into the late morning hours as police investigated.
"We have no idea what happened. It's crazy," one woman said. "We saw the cleaner hosing down the street this morning and we saw all of the blood."
A friend of the victim said Riotte was drinking with a group of people at an Oswego bar and was walking home when he was struck.
"He was trying to do the responsible thing," the man said. "He lived in the subdivision right near (the scene)."
Police would not release any further details about how the crash and subsequent fatality occurred.
Nevin, Riotte and Schillinger all attended Oswego High School, Beacon-News records showed. Nevin graduated in 2005, while Riotte and Schillinger were members of the school's Class of 2008, according to records.
Police have been assisted in the case by representatives of the Oswego Fire Protection District, the Kendall County state's attorney's office, the Kendall County sheriff's department and Illinois State Police, Delphey said.
