Woman Fatally Struck By Vehicle In Chicago Loop; Driver Apprehended After Attempting To Flee
CHICAGO (CBS) -- A woman was fatally struck by a vehicle in Chicago's Loop Friday afternoon, Chicago police confirm.
Police said it happened around 5:21 p.m. in the 300 block of South Wabash.
The 55-year-old woman was crossing at the intersection when she was struck by a speeding red BMW sedan heading in the wrong direction down a one-way street, police said.
A security guard who works around the corner said another woman started pounding on the windows where he works. He stepped outside and saw the victim lying in the street, and he quickly called 911.
Starbucks employee Rachel Guryn saw a similar scene when she stepped outside.
"I just saw her laying on the floor," Guryn said. "She wasn't moving. There were cops who happened to actually be in our Starbucks, so they just ran out and went to go help her. It genuinely scares me knowing that I walk that way every day."
The victim sustained blunt force trauma to the head and transported to Northwestern Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
The 26-year-old driver attempted to flee the scene but was caught and placed into custody.
