Pedestrian Hit On I-65
GARY, Ind. (STMW) - A car struck a Chicago woman wearing lingerie who was walking on I-65 Saturday morning, seriously injuring her near Gary, Indiana.
The pedestrian was identified as Channing Profit, 20, of Chicago, according to a statement from Indiana Sate Police.
At 4:57 a.m. Indiana State Police Sergeant Chad Woody responded to a call about a female pedestrian walking on I-65, according to the statement from ISP.
As he was responding to this area Indiana State Police radio dispatch received another call about a pedestrian being hit, the statement said.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman, wearing lingerie type clothing, high heels and a wig, was walking north between the two lanes of traffic in the southbound lanes of I-65 about a mile south of the 15th Avenue exit, according to the statement. The area is also on a bridge on a curve.
Profit stated she had an argument with her boyfriend and voluntarily got out of his vehicle and began walking on I-65.
Mirian R. Brown, 48 of Hammond, Indiana, driving a 1996 Nissan Altima with her defroster activated because there was dense foggy patches in this area when she noticed the pedestrian partially in the right lane, the statement said.
Brown tried to steer left but could not avoid the African-American woman. After she was hit, she rolled onto the hood of the Altima, into the windshield -- shattering it – and then onto the roof, concaving it before she came to rest in the left lane of I-65, the statement said.
She was taken to Saint Mary's Medical Center in Hobart with a broken lower leg, upper arm and a fractured shoulder. We have not been able to positively identify her from the information she has given us. Profit did test positive for controlled substance and alcohol, according to the statement.
Brown was not injured.
Charges will be presented to the Lake County Prosecutor.
