Peavy: White Sox Buying Into Ventura's System

(WSCR) Robin Ventura may be the anti-Ozzie Guillen.

While Guillen was outspoken and crass, Ventura is mild-mannered and keeps team issues in-house.

White Sox hurler Jake Peavy said Ventura has brought a calming, comfortable presence to the White Sox clubhouse.

"That might not have been the case in times past," Peavy told The Mully and Hanley Show. "We obviously had a lot going on on the field, off the field (under former manager Ozzie Guillen.) It's just a good atmosphere (now.) We're so excited that we're in the position we're in. We understand we got a long way to go, but I can promise you this and it's so cliche to say, but I promise you were going day by day. We show up and we're ready to win today. ... Nobody gets ahead of themselves and everybody is trying to do what they can do on this given day to help the team win. When you have the whole team buy into that attitude, good things can happen."

Through his first 51 games as manager, Ventura has led the White Sox to a 29-22 record, good for first in the American League Central. Still, Peavy said the hiring of Venutra was a shock.

"I think everybody was kind of shocked by it just because he didn't have any coaching experience," Peavy said. "(Cardinals manager Mike Matheny) didn't have any coaching experience. Ozzie Guillen, when he got this job, didn't have any managerial experience. I think if you play the game and you play it as long as Robin has played it for, you know the game of baseball."
