Peavy, Barney Win Gold Gloves
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Jake Peavy and Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney both won their first career Gold Glove awards on Tuesday.
Peavy, 31, tied with Tampa Bay's Jeremy Hellickson to be named the American League's best defensive pitchers. It was the first time either pitcher won the award, and only the third time in the award's 55-year history that there was a tie.
In 219 innings, Peavy committed only one error, with 22 assists and 14 putouts. He joins Mark Buehrle and Jim Kaat as the only Sox pitchers to win a Gold Glove, and the 14th Sox player overall to win the award.
Peavy also signed a two-year $29 million contract extension with the White Sox on Tuesday.
Barney, 26, also won his first Gold Glove, after committing only two errors in 155 games at second base, and leading all NL second basemen with a .997 fielding percentage, breaking Ryne Sandberg's previous team record of .995 set in 1991.
Barney went 141 consecutive innings without an error, breaking Sandberg's team record of 123 errorless games over two seasons in 1989 and 1990, and matching the major league record set by Placido Polanco of the Detroit Tigers in 2007.
