Peavy Aiming For Opening Day
Chicago White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy had one of the busiest offseasons of this career as he tried to recover from surgery. Peavy detached the latissimus dorsi muscle below his right shoulder during a July 6 game.
After throwing 40 pitches off the mound, Peavy has his sights set on a full return by opening day.
"I'd say 60-70% off the mound if I had to put a percentage on it," Peavy said of his current status. "The biggest thing is that I've completed the throwing program that we came up with."
A throwing program so intense that he found himself throwing on Christmas Day. But the program went a long way towards getting him to the point where he could be back on his game soon after spring training commences.
"I completed [the program] at the end of January," Peavy said. "And I've just been on a throwing program like I would always be on coming into camp."
As anyone who has seen Peavy pitch knows, he's a tremendous competitor and will do everything he possibly can to get back on the mound as soon as he can.
"I've pushed it as much as I can while listening to my body and making sure that I'm not doing anything to jeopardize or set me back," Peavy said. "I want to be ready for opening day, that's me."
Keeping Peavy healthy for a full season is the most important thing, and both he and the White Sox know that. With the offseason additions and a healthy Peavy, the White Sox could be a tough team to beat in 2011.
