PAWS To Help Oklahoma Deal With Post-Tornado Influx Of Dogs, Cats
(CBS) -- Volunteers from PAWS Chicago are going to tornado-torn Oklahoma this weekend to bring back 75 homeless dogs and cats.
The offer to help was made by Rochelle Michalek, executive director of PAWS Chicago, who says animal care and control near Oklahoma City has been inundated.
"They had, just within a few days, already received over 150 animals that had been displaced because of the tornado," she says. "So they were very, very receptive to us coming down and helping."
Michalek says to take some of the pressure off Oklahoma City animal care and control, PAWS volunteers will be bringing back the 75 dogs and cats. Almost all of them have been at the Oklahoma shelter for a few weeks.
"What we wanted to make sure of is because the influx into the sheltering system just has increased dramatically, that these animals aren't euthanized because of the disaster," she says.
Michalek says PAWS is looking for foster homes and permanent homes for the animals.
She says about 50 animals will be ready for adoption by Monday.
