Paterno's Name Removed From Big Ten Trophy
(CBS) Joe Paterno's name has been removed from the Big Ten's championship game trophy, league commissioner Jim Delany announced Monday.
"We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno's name on the trophy at this time," Delany said in a statement. "The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial. We believe that it's important to keep the focus on the players and the teams that will be competing in the inaugural championship game."
Paterno was fired as Penn State's head coach last week amid a child sexual abuse scandal involving former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.
The Stagg-Paterno Trophy was to be awarded for the first time to the winner of the Big Ten Championship Game Dec. 3. The trophy will now just be called the Stagg Championship Trophy.
