Pastor Worried About Mother In Japan

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (WBBM) -- The pastor of a Japanese-American church congregation in Arlington Heights says he is worried about his mother living in Japan - and her close proximity to the damaged nuclear power plant.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's Steve Miller reports, when the Rev. Yugo Kubari of the Chicago Japanese Mission Church got the news Wednesday that the U.S. government was saying people should not be within 50 miles of the Fukushima nuclear plant, he worried.

His 78-year-old mother lives 45 miles away from the plant.

"It's really tough," Kobari said.

He said he is encouraging her to leave her town, Shirakawa.

"When they go to the supermarket, the food is gone – almost nothing there, she said. Electricity is very limited to certain times, and some areas, no water," Kobari said.

Lines for gasoline are two to three hours long, Kobari says his brother tells him. Then, after a long wait, sometimes it's sold out.
