Pastor Who Camped Out On Roof Plans Anti-Violence Trek
CHICAGO (AP) — A Chicago pastor who camped on the roof of an abandoned motel says lacing up his sneakers is part of a new plan to address gun violence.
The Rev. Corey Brooks said Sunday at his New Beginnings Church of Chicago that he would set out on a three-month walk beginning June 5. He hopes to raise $15 million.
The money will go toward building a community center. Brooks plans to his begin journey in New York and end it in California.
Brooks wants to build his new center on the site where a motel, known for prostitution and drug dealing, once stood.
Through his rooftop vigil this winter, Brooks raised enough money to buy the property and demolish the motel. That included a $100,000 donation from movie mogul Tyler Perry.
