Pastor, Deacon Robbed At Gunpoint In Chatham Church
(CBS) -- A Chicago church became a crime scene this week. The victims: a pastor and a deacon, held up at gunpoint.
It happened Thursday night at the Liberty Christian Center in Chatham as Pastor Anton Mathews and deacon Edgar Horton prepped for bible study. The doors were open -- they always are -- in the Chatham house of worship.
Two men rushed in; one had a gun. The weapon was pointed at the pastor's head.
"They wasn't playing," Mathews tells CBS 2's Brad Edwards.
Bishop James Dukes of Liberation Christian Center spoke out about violence earlier this week to CBS 2's Jim Williams, saying, "The whole city, I believe, is suffering from PTSD."
On Friday, he lamented what happened at his own church, saying members have suggested they now close the doors.
Even with the robbery, bible study went on at 7 p.m. Thursday.
"They still know the difference between right and wrong, and they chose to do wrong," Mathews said of the robbers.
