Pair Faces Multiple Charges After Elgin Police Chase
ELGIN, Ill. (STMW) -- A man and a woman are facing several charges after one of them allegedly stole a vehicle, injured a detective and caused a police chase Sunday night in the northwest suburbs.
Jorge Chavez, 18, had a warrant out for his arrest and was seen in the parking lot of a Walmart at 1100 S. Randall Road in Elgin about 9 p.m., police said in a statement. Chavez and the 19-year-old woman with him drove off in a vehicle reported stolen from Chicago.
Police pursued the allegedly stolen vehicle and eventually crashed in to a light pole about 2.5 miles away at Route 31 and Sundown Road in South Elgin, police said.
Both the man and the woman got out and started running after the crash, but police caught up and arrested them shortly after, police said.
A detective suffered a "significant, but non-life threatening" arm injury when he tried to arrest Chavez in the Walmart parking lot. He was treated at a hospital and has since been released.
Chavez, of the 6000 block of South Rockwell Avenue in Chicago, has been charged with two counts of receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle, three counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, burglary, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, all felonies, police said.
Jamie B. Thurnau, 18, of the 2000 block of Dorchester in Elgin, has been charged with two felony counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, felony burglary, and misdemeanor resisting or obstructing a peace officer, police said.
Both are scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday morning in Kane County.
