Pair Charged With Trying To Make Meth At Home
CROWN POINT, Ind. (STMW) - Two people have been charged in Lake Superior Court with attempted dealing in methamphetamine and three related charges after they were arrested last fall in northwestern Indiana's Cedar Lake.
Tanya Marie Stephens, 26, of Hebron, and John James Wachaldo, 34, of Cedar Lake, are accused of trying to manufacture meth on Sept. 14 at a residence on West 132nd Place, Cedar Lake.
A confidential informant tipped a member of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force that Stephens and Wachaldo had asked to come over to the informant's residence to make meth.
The two arrived in a pickup truck with two large duffel bags. A short time later, police spoke to Wachaldo outside the home and Stephens inside. Officers could detect a strong chemical odor coming from one of the bedrooms. The resident gave police consent to search.
Police recovered items used to manufacture methamphetamine.
Court records indicate there was enough material to manufacture more than 10 grams of methamphetamine.
The other charges are possession of a controlled substance manufacturing precursors, possession of more than 10 grams of pseudoephedrine and possession of anhydrous ammonia or ammonia solution, all class D felonies punishable by a maximum three-year sentence. The attempted dealing charge is punishable by a maximum 20-year sentence.
