Paintballs Out As A Way To Deal With Coyotes In Geneva
(CBS) – There will be no shooting coyotes with paintball guns in Geneva, city leaders agreed Monday as they discussed other ways locals can deter the marauding animals.
The far western suburb had experienced a rash of attacks on pets.
Monday, officials continued discussing a strategy to deal with coyotes. One idea that had been suggested was allowing police to shoot paintballs at the animals, but Mayor Kevin Burns said that suggestion was deemed "too extreme."
"Never once did the city council consider allowing our police force or citizens to fire at these coyotes, whether it be a paintball or with any kind of projectile," he told reporters.
Burns said the city recommends passive "hazing" techniques to scare the animals away. Workshops for city workers and residents are slated for later this month.
City officials say coyotes have attacked four pets between May and December of last year.
